Which are the fastest electric cars of the year?
Gone are the days when gearheads looked at electric vehicles as something from the future. Electric cars have revolutionized the automobile industry, and today, almost every car maker has an EV in its lineup.
Nowadays, even run-of-the-mill family EVs have acceleration that, several years ago, was the preserve of gasoline-powered hot hatches. But even within the world of electric vehicles, there’s fast, and there’s really fast.
There are a couple of electric cars that can accelerate as fast as 3.0 seconds to 60 mph. We’ve rounded up the world’s fastest electric cars, the list containing the fastest 0–60 vehicles in the EV segment (hybrids weren’t taken into consideration, only the pure electric road cars). Let’s get started!
1. 2016 Rimac Concept One: 0–60 mph in 2.4 seconds
The Rimac Concept One isn’t just one of the world’s first all-electric cars, but also one of the fastest electric cars available at the moment on the market. Despite heavily funded automakers and technological advancements, a relatively unknown battery supplier created the first electric supercar in the world: the Rimac Concept One.
The manufacturer’s EV gained popularity after Richard Hammond’s life-threatening car accident involving the fast EV. And even before its official launch in 2016, the model was one of the fastest electric cars in the whole world.
Some of the features that make this electric automobile so special are its four independent motors, which have a combined output of 1,224 horsepower and 1,180 lb-ft of torque. This setup is paired with a 2-speed dual-clutch transmission to motivate the vehicle to 60 mph in just 2.4 seconds and a top speed of 221 mph.
2. 2020 Porsche Taycan Turbo S: 0-60 mph in 2.4 seconds
Next on the list of the world’s fastest electric cars is the 2020 Porsche Taycan. The car made its debut in 2020 as the automaker’s first electric model with different trim levels. The Turbo S was the fastest and most powerful accelerating trim of the bunch.
Its impressive 750-horsepower output was 198 hp more than the original Porsche Taycan, and despite featuring an electric powertrain, the Taycan Turbo S model performed well as well as most Porsches.
Though the Turbo S weighs 5,100 pounds, this doesn’t stop it from blazing to 60 mph in just 2.4 seconds and finishing the quarter-mile in a remarkable 10.5 on its way to a 162 mph top speed. This makes it one of the fastest electric cars in the world.
Back in 2020, only the Lamborghini Huracán Performante (2.2 seconds) and Porsche 918 Spyder (2.1 seconds) had faster 0-60 times.
3. 2017 Tesla Model S P100D ‘Ludicrous+’: 0-60 mph in 2.3 seconds
Tesla introduced its high-end P100D trim level to the Model S lineup in 2017. With the manufacturer’s ‘Ludricous+ mode,’ the Model S P100D can reach 60 mph in just 2.3 seconds, making it one of the fastest electric cars.
Not only was the P100D the fastest Model S, but it was also the third fastest production vehicle at 0.60 mph at the time, only behind the Porsche 918 Spyder and Ferrari LaFerrari.
This achievement was more magnificent and impressive considering the other two automobiles were limited-production models with million-dollar price tags. Also, unlike other models, the Model S is a four-door car that can hold plenty of cargo and seat five adults.
4. 2022 Tesla Model S Plaid: 0-60 mph in 2.0 seconds
The fastest 60-mph vehicles are typically 2-door limited-edition models with little cargo space. But Tesla did an impressive job defying the odds again with its Model S Plaid, which blazes to 60 mph in just 2.0 seconds.
As one of the fastest electric cars on the market, the Plaid was unlikely to be any other vehicle in the Model S’s history. It was more powerful, lower, longer, and lighter than other versions from previous model years.
The model also pioneered Tesla’s triple-motor system, coughing up 1,050 lb-ft of torque and 1,020 horses. This is enough to push the Model S Plais to 60 mps in an impressive 2.0 seconds. It can dominate the German Autobahn, taking just 9.3 seconds to clear the quarter mile.
All these impressive figures helped to etch its name on the list of the world’s fastest electric cars.
5. 2025 Deus Vayanne: 0-60 mph in 1.9 seconds
Deus drew the original sketch for the Vayanne model in 2020, immediately catching the attention of car enthusiasts. Besides its sleek appearance, the Deus Vayanne was an electric supercar with otherworldly acceleration.
According to the manufacturer, the hypercar needs only 1.9 seconds to hit the 60 mph mark and can achieve a top speed of 250 mph.
Deus is working with Italdesign and Williams Advanced Engineering to build the Vayanne, and deliveries of the hypercar will begin in 2025. While we don’t know much about electric motors, the electric hyper vehicle promises 2,243 horsepower and 1,504 lb-ft of torque, and it will definitely be one of the fastest electric cars on the market.
6. 2023 Pininfarina Battista: 0-60 mph in 1.8 seconds
Italian design company Pininfarina understands a thing or two about making cars look stunning, as it’s responsible for some of the most exquisite Ferraris ever. When Pininfarina decided to start making cars, it delivered a beautiful electric hypercar.
Its first automobile—the Battista—isn’t just a hand-built, stunning car with a carbon-fiber structure. Thanks to a T-shaped 120 kWh battery pack and four electric motors, the Battista has 1,900 hp and 1,696 lb-ft of torque, making it one of the fastest electric cars available right now on the market.
This setup allows it to reach 60 mph in just 1.8 seconds, while it clears the quarter mile in just 8.6 seconds. The performance isn’t the only feature that makes this Italian masterpiece a jewel. Pininfarina will make only 150 Battistas for the entire world.
7. 2023 Aspark Owl: 0-60 mph in 1.72 seconds
Aspark’s Owl has been in the works since 2015, and the company began deliveries in late 2023. The Owl needs only 1.7 seconds to sprint to 60 mph and does the quarter-mile in just 8.7 seconds. In fact, before another Croatian masterpiece came to be, the Aspark Owl was the fastest-accelerating electric vehicle in the world to 60 mph.
With four electric motors, the setup delivers an impressive 1,984 hp and 1,416 lb-ft of torque. In May 2023, the supercar broke the eight-mile and quarter-mile speed records for EVs. The electric car averaged 192.02 mph in the eight-mile and an insane 198.12 mph in the quarter-mile.
The Aspark Owl’s outstanding time makes it not just one of the fastest electric cars but the second-fastest 0-60 vehicle, only behind the 2023 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170.
8. 2024 Rimac Nevera: 0-60 mph in 1.7 Seconds
With 1,914 hp and 1,725 lb-ft of torque, the gorgeous Rimac Nevera is more powerful than many Ferraris, Bugattis, or even Lamborghini. But that’s not all; the 2023 Rimac Nevera is currently No. 1 among the world’s fastest electric cars.
The Nevera sprints to 60 mph in a dizzying 1.7 seconds, clears the quarter mile in just 8.25 seconds and reaches a top speed of 258 mph. Limited to only 150 copies, the Nevera comes with an eye-watering $2.2-million price tag. This price gets you outrageous acceleration, 205 miles of range, and a chance to claim the fastest EV.
