Top Bestselling Cars of 2024
In the United States, when you notice that sales of full-size pickup trucks are going down and compact cars are marking big increases, you really start to wonder if we’re living in a parallel universe. However, truth be told, new-car sales are settling back into a well-deserved and much-expected normalcy after many years of supply-chain problems.
Of course, prices are still quite high, but inventories are also back at usual levels, which should definitely benefit shoppers. Today, we decided to rank some of the best new cars you could find, at least in the first quarter of 2024. You will find many models on this list that didn’t appear on any bestselling lists before, and you will soon realize why it’s their time to shine now.
Chevrolet Trax: 37,588 units sold
This new entry-level Trax SUV won a 10Best award this year, and it’s constantly proving that a rather attractive base price could truly go a long way. Starting below $22,000, the new-for-2024 Trax is now one of the bestselling Chevys, and sales are definitely outpacing its predecessor.
Honda HR-V: 28,062 units sold
Plenty of subcompact crossovers marked pretty big increases at the start of the year. As imagined, the HR-V was also the bestselling model in this specific segment. Sales went up by 44 percent through the first quarter, even if it still has quite a long way to catch the compact CR-V found much higher on this list.
Jeep Wrangler: 38,308 units sold
A refresh for this year brought a brand-new grille and a couple of other features inside, and it still didn’t change the fate of this car too much. Looking back through the first quarter, sales were only up to 1 percent compared with last year.
Subaru Crosstrek: 38,405 units sold
The Crosstrek was definitely the bestselling Subaru at this point, but it’s still back to the #2 spot, and it’s all due to a strong first quarter from a larger Forester that’s also on this list. Until now, sales declined 8 percent.
Ford Maverick: 39,061 units sold
The Maverick managed to find its way on this list for the very first time, but we still can’t say we didn’t expect its increasing popularity. This extremely affordable compact pickup truck has both a hybrid powertrain and a strong 2.0-liter engine. Moreover, it combines a crossover-like driving experience with the never-ending practicality of a pickup bed. Moreover, sales were up by a whopping 82% over last year.
Ford Transit: 39,890 units sold
Big vans such as Transit are work vehicles, and truth be told, they are so popular thanks to their utility. Sales of this full-size van were up to 25% compared with last year. It also includes 2891 sales of the electric e-transit model.
Nissan Sentra: 40,081 units sold
As the mid-size Altima didn’t make it on this list, the compact Sentra gained traction. Its sales were all the way up to 78 percent through the first quarter, which places this model in second place.
Honda Accord: 41,927 units sold
It’s truly no secret that we’re obsessed with the Accord. After all, it won 10Best more than any other vehicle, and it also got first place in the most recent mid-size sedan comparison test. However, sales declined 2 percent through the first quarter.
Tesla Model 3: 42,000 units sold (estimated)
Tesla is having a bit of a hard time selling cars right now, and that’s mostly because it built way more cars than it sold in the first quarter. The Model 3 is automatically lower on this list than it was last year, even if the company says it’s still ramping up production of an updated model. Our Tesla sales numbers come from Automotive News estimates.
Hyundai Tucson: 45,509 units sold
The Tucson compact SUV is still the best Hyundai out there, even if its sales went down 1 percent compared to last year. Luckily, an updated model for 2025 might help turn that around.
Subaru Forester: 48,546 units sold
Even if there’s a brand new 2025 Forester right around the corner, sales of the model increased by 60 percent in the first quarter. The outgoing generation might live on in Wilderness trim for now, even as the latest model starts to arrive at various dealerships around the country.
Chevrolet Equinox: 54,185 units sold
The Equinox keeps on selling in big numbers even if it’s at the end of the current generation, especially since its sales went up to 2 percent over last year. The brand new 2025 Equinox is expected to arrive later this year with a brand new look inside and out, and there’s also an Equinox EV on the way.
Jeep Grand Cherokee: 54,455 units sold
The Grand Cherokee midsize SUV keeps outselling its stablemates in the Jeep lineup. Moreover, it is Stellantis’ second-bestselling vehicle, right after the Ram pickup. Sales were flat through the first quarter.
Ford Explorer: 58,465 units sold
The Explorer is by far the bestselling three-row SUV in the country, especially since sales were flat compared with last year. An updated 2025 model will be expected later this year.
Toyota Corolla: 60,071 units sold
Sales of the Corolla compact car increased by a whopping 40% through the first quarter, but it’s still not enough to catch its biggest rival, the Honda Civic. The only thing we can do is watch their ongoing rivalry throughout the year and see who comes out on top. Truth be told, it’s quite exciting.
Honda Civic: 61,929 units sold
The Civic went up by 36 percent, which definitely made it the bestselling compact car in the country. In fact, it was even enough to earn it a well-deserved place in the top 10 bestsellers. A Civic Hybrid is expected to join this lineup for the 2025 model year.
GMC Sierra: 68,597 units sold
Even if the sales of this Chevy Silverado sibling and all the other full-size pickups were down, the Sierra lineup still managed to gain 2 percent, at least in comparison to last year. This also includes both the light-duty Sierra 1500 and the heavy-duty 2500 and 3500 models.
Toyota Camry: 78,337 units sold
Sales for the Toyota Camry increased by 19 percent through the first quarter of this year, and these statistics refer to the old model. Can you imagine how well the new hybrid-only 2025 Camry will do?
Ram Pickup: 89,417 units sold
The Ram is continuously struggling this year, especially since its sales went down by 15 percent compared with this time last year. Maybe the arrival of the refreshed model next year and the Ramcharger plug-in hybrid will help it get back on the right track.
Nissan Rogue: 90,804
Rogue sales are quite impressive and strong so far, marking a 19 percent increase over last year. A styling update for 2024 that also came with brand-new features might have had something to do with it.
Honda CR-V: 95,038 units sold
Even if it wasn’t enough to catch the Toyota RAV4, the CR-V marked a 41 percent increase in sales compared to this time last year. Honda also added that over half of those sales were of the CR-V Hybrid.
Tesla Model Y: 109,000 units sold (estimated)
The Model Y went a bit down when it came to this list, at least regarding the first quarter of this year. It’s also worth mentioning that Tesla doesn’t report its sales numbers as other automakers do, and that’s why we can only rely on a couple of estimates.
