Chevrolet SSR

If you didn’t know, the SSR in the car’s name stood for Super Sport Roadster. Funny, right? But let’s go back to being serious again and see why the Chevrolet SSR was one of the worst cars ever created.

While it was made to rival models such as Ford Thunderbird and Dodge Charger, the Chevy just didn’t have what it takes to get the public interested. It was made from 2003 to 2006, had a 5.3 liter V8 engine with 300 horsepower and the appearance of a failed experiment between pickup truck and convertible car.

  1. Chevy SSR is a collector’s car…..such as cool idea and design with plenty of power. Great roadster with plenty of room to take along to sports games.

    1. The demise of the SSR was so sad. It was truly experimental and original. Problem was, as is often the case with GM, that except 4 the Corvette, it has never figured out in recent memory how 2 make $$ on vehicles with a limited market. So they kill good ideas simply because it isn’t shoveling profits in the door right away. Their list of marketing failures is almost endless which was a large part of the reason that they went bankrupt in 2009.

    1. The Vega was an AWESOME little car. Great run around town, cheap, chick-car. Until the aluminum blocked seized the pistons when it ran hot. Oh well, so much for reputation.

    2. When I was a boy my aunt got a brand new Vega went on a trip to FL gm md made it to VA engine locked up tighter then fort Knox’s:(

    3. GM could have made the Vega good—–but given that they were only interested in cheap and not investing in technology or consumer education as in checking oil levels more frequently the car was a failure. They then replaced it with the Monza—–lots of HP in the V8 version but U supposedly had 2 lift the engine out 2 change the last two spark plugs. Another GM quirk, we’ll work at making it cheap 2 assemble—–more profits 4 us—–4 U—-well more expensive replacement parts later.

    1. GM’s kinda last attempt at making a cheap car. Suspension was questionable—–and in those days GM could have made a station wagon that could have added 2 sales but they didn’t bother. Again, GM still hadn’t learned the finer points of a 4-cylinder engine. With some $$ they might have made the Vega engine more reliable by then. However, spending $$ on reliability or forward-looking tech (we’ll just mourn the Saturn EV) wasn’t GM’s emphasis in those days. Eventually, they gave up—–established NUMMI with Toyota in Fremont, CA (now a Tesla plant) and marketed the GEO Prizm, Pontiac Vibe, etc which were really Toyotas with different taillights.

  2. The Pontiac Aztec was ahead of its time. Plenty of us loved it!!!! (Maybe because we didn’t want the same car everyone else had)
The only reason I got rid of mine was because I couldn’t fit a family of six in it when my fourth child was on his way.

  3. The Pinto? Fast? Not mine. I could probably have walked as fast after waiting for it to creep through the gears and get up to speed. Then, as you mentioned, the fire factor. I got rear ended while taking a corner and took the hit right where the gas tank was. When I took my car in for repair I was told that if the dent had been 1/4″ deeper, I would have blown sky high. Not long after, the problem became public knowledge and I got rid of my Pinto!!

  4. There were some horrible cars on the UK Market in the 60’s. The Renault Dauphin, which rusted in front of your eyes. The Lada boxes. The FSR import.and anything from the Dagenham works

  5. Like another responder the yugo and chevette should have been on the list..I had a pinto(really 2) and treated them horribly but they both went over 100k with very few issues

  6. All of the new Lexus line of cars and suvs are major ugly! The front end of these cars are horrendous. This proves that Japanese manufacturers are not good at designing or creating any product. This country succeeds on copying American products then mass producing them cheaper.

  7. How come the Tesla Cyber Truck is not here? I have been in the car business all of my life, and Tesla’s truck is a shining example of a unit with a design striving to be different. It definitely is, but they tried too hard. It’s just weird. Here is a prediction – It will only be on the market until the rich kids that HAVE to have something different each get one. And that won’t take long.

  8. Ford Granada ..bought brand new and after 6 months irt broke down every time I drove ie. Finally had to tow it from driveway to trade it in

  9. Oldsmobile developed a “transverse” diesel engine. True diesel, which got 46 to 54 mpg on the hight at 85mph. MY files. Why bad? The intake valve for air , was only 8 inches off the ground and sucked in water if you were driving through water that was 3 inches or deeper. Sucked air with water which pretty much does in the engine. When it did run , 35 mpg in town, and it got quieter the faster you drove. Drove from Dallas to Amarillo with a full load , and used less than 1/4 tank of diesel fuel.

  10. I had a 74 Pinto with A/C. IT was made in Europe somewhere, I believe because all of the bolts were metric. I LOVED my Pinto and drove it across country pulling a U-Haul trailer.
