  1. My Toyota 4 Runner is a 2001 *23 years old* and still drives like a new car. Of course ‘ve maintained it with recommended service over the years but since i am 80 years old, This car will definately outlive me and be handed down to my children.

    1. My 2002 Toyota Corolla is still going strong has not yet reached 100,000. Only maintenance is battery every 5 years and oil changes once a year.

    2. Love this! My granddad his car is always used to run like new and they would be like 10 years plus old. They still smell New inside because he would park him always in the garage and then he would cover them with a car cover.

    3. I had a 2004 Camry I gave to my dtr when I got my 2008 Highlander. She still drives the Camry and I sold the Highlander to my neighbor who just drove it to California from Tampa. I now have a 2023 Rav 4. Love it!

    4. I have a 2000 Toyota Camry strawberry red, 5 speed that is still running in good condition I still love driving it.

    5. Carole, please run, not walk, to your mechanic. 3rd Gen 4Runners (1996-2002) lower balljoints have a nasty habit of unexpected failure causing the front wheel to come loose and tuck under the car. This can happen at freeway speeds or just pulling into your driveway. There was a free replacement recall but it ended in 2012. Search “4runner lower balljoint failure”. Good luck

    6. My brother in law has a 2007 with 315,xxx miles on lt. I’m amazed when ever I ride in it. Smooth, quiet, and comfortable.

    7. I also have a Toyota 4 Runner, it had 232,000 miles on the clock. A spot in the frame was rotted out. The steering rack was leaking and it needed exhaust. I’m a mechanic by trade so I bought all the parts. There was actually a piece made that we weld onto the frame I guess they write out in that spot quite a bit. I did the timing belt, water pump, idler, and tensioner change the oil. I didn’t even tune it up it runs like a top when I go outside to get the three cars I have I usually pick the 4 runner only because I like it the best and it’s got some kind of crazy package when it was new so it’s got big wheels and tires and handles like a go kart

    8. Carol – Reading your post made me feel good. I’m driving my husband’s 1999 Land Rover Discovery that was his company car and he bought it when he retired. After he passed away I sold my little BMW Convertible (about the same year) and since I was moving from Florida to the Mountains of Western North Carolina I kept the Land Rover. Love it – needs a little cosmetic work, but runs well and only has 146,000 miles on it. I’m 88, so it will probably outlast me – just like your car will you!!

    9. My sister also has a 1998 T4R and it is fit as a fiddle. I had a Volvo 240DL but my girlfriend at the time let her teenage son go joy riding and he totalled it. He was unscratched, but my tank got de-tread-dead.

    10. Much the same with my Toyota Highlander SUV. It’s from 2005. I’ve never had a problem with it, and I also think it will outlive me.

    11. We too are a Toyota family. My husband and I have a 2022 Prius, 2012 Sequoia with almost 300,000 miles, and a 2008 Highlander over 300,000 miles .
Our daughter has 2 Highlanders an older one and a new one.
      Our son has a Highlander
Our other daughter has a 2003 Corolla with over 300,000 miles
Toyota’s are amazing vehicles…and will last forever with the general maintenance.

    12. My 2000 Toyota 4Runner will be 26 years old next month. It only has 166,000 miles on it. Still going strong! I just wish it had some of the safety features and bluetooth like the newer cars. Other than that, I’m happy I have such a reliable vehicle.

    13. Toyotas are great I have a 2003 Toyota Camrey and it still runs too. Like you I am 75 and I think it will out last me too.
      Ginger

  2. I’ve just bought a Honda Civic 2.2 diesel and I love it. Averaged 65 mpg on a long trip. The car tax (England) is £20/year. I’m currently getting 46 mpg urban driving. The acceleration is fantastic. They are bulletproof 👏👏👏

    1. I bought 2 Honda Civics and an Accord. That was enough to steer me away from Honda forever. However, I can’t begin to tell you all the good things about my Prius. Only expense I ever have is the oil change when the freebies were over. Love that little car!!!! One tank of gas lasts a month!!

    2. My son was driving his 2000 Honda Civic, 6 months new on highway 401 in Canada coming from US, a semi forced him off the road, he was forced onto a graveled shoulder, his car rolled over to its side, slide across the highway, then rolled 5-6 times almost to the on coming traffic. He unfortunately didn’t have his seatbelt on which he usually did and was killed. The car was destroyed. I’m not so sure I would say it’s bulletproof even if it’s 24 years later, they don’t look a lot different to me. Just be careful in the Honda Civic and obviously any car.

    3. Lol, acceleration in a diesel is fantastic? I guess fantastic is a relative term because diesels aren’t known for their acceleration, unless it’s a turbo and I don’t believe the Civic is a turbo. They are also the biggest polluters and you’re not doing the planet any good by driving one.

    1. I have a 2019 H-Sonata. I get an average of 29.5 miles per gallon and over 30 on the freeway. I have 21,000 miles on it and have been very, very satisfied with all of the features that it has. Three different times, it stopped me from rear-ending a car on a busy Street. All of the features are phenomenal and I love it. Happy in Idaho.

    2. I have a Hyundai XG350L 2004. Too of the line with166,000 miles. I put brakes for the first time when it had 121,000 miles on it. It was my Dad’s ride and when he passed, I received it. Best car I have ever owned

    3. I have a 2012 Sonata Limited with 13,000 miles on it. It still looks and runs like new. Of course I have regularly maintained it. The most important thing to do for maintenance is, IMHO, always change your oil and filter on a timely basis. I’m 70 yo, and I have never had an engine fail on me. The bodies have rusted and corroded before the engine ever had a major problem. I firmly believe that Hyundai makes a fine, sturdy automobile.

    4. I’m sorry but you cannot even put a Hyundai in a group with a Toyota on any level just saying we’re talking about top cars not Cars that make it because we do maintenance Plus on them.

    1. I have a 2011 Nissan Sentra 2.5L (Spec-V). It currently have 294k miles on it. I also have a 98 Sentra GXE with 538k miles and she still runs well. I sometimes use it as my daily driver. I bought it with 178k miles. In saying all that, your Maxima will last a long time.

    2. I purchased a new 1999 GLE, drove 10 years 160,400 miles with never an issue. Just normal maintenance. Still smooth as silk when I sold it to a neighbor for his daughter going off to college. Take care of it and it will last a long time.

    3. I have a nissan titan crew cab 2004. I love it. Comfortable as can be. All I do is change the oil every year and use synthetic Mobil. No a lot of toys on it like these new cars. I can still change out the battery on my own. If I ever buy a new truck with all those toys on in, I’m keeping the 2004.

    1. I wouldn’t brag about being UNION. Too many mafia leaders were UNION.
ANNNND, everything UNION made is crap. Look at GM.

    2. All right well here’s one for you, my 98 Tahoe went over 200,000 miles on it a piece of a frame rotted out. I’m up here in the northeast so we get all kinds of salt and brine and you name it. They put it on the road When I took it to the auto recycling center. There was a tear in my eye because it was like taking part of the family down there wish I had bought two and kept one in the garage. Never had any issues with it ever anything mechanically nothing all we did was change the oil I think I put on one distributor cap and brakes and tires.

    1. 2015 KIA Soul 105,000 miles (many of them extended road miles) but have only replace brake pads, one set of tires and things like wiper blades. I’ve used synthetic oil for years and change it about every 6-7 thousand miles. I’ve traveled from east to west, north to south and now at age 81 it will likely be my final car.

    2. Kia 14 years old 120,000 miles and still going strong or how about Nissan bluebird? Sold to relation at 130000 miles and 18 years old and was in use until two years ago? Love the Nissan which for ten years towed a caravan all over uk and Europe. Common theme is regular servicing by reputable mechanics!

    3. My 2015 Sedona’s engine just blew up for no reason! Apparently Kia knows there is a problem but is refusing to do a recall! Just turned over 100k miles.

    4. I am on my second Kia, A 2015 Sportage, then a 2023 Sorento. My favorite cars ever. I have had no problems ever. My ex boss had over 250,000 miles on her Sorento, with no problems! Give me Kia any time. I am 70 and expect this to be the last car I buy.

    5. Hahahahaha. Talk to your local KIA dealer. They will tell you that they are junk just like its sister company Hyundai.

    6. Kia SUCKS! Just wait until you get over 100,000 miles. It will literally stop working. Do your research. They suck

  3. I have a 98 crown Vic…it only has 98k on it but I seem similar vehicles with 300k plus on them..All I had to do was replace the front suspension a few years back as he bushings were done…also own an 08 Ridgeline…about 181k but have seen these also with 300k plus on them

    1. I have a 2006 Ridgeline with 289k miles on it and still running strong. I also have 2014 Ridgeline with 120k on it. The ’14 is my 6th Honda including, a 1983 Civic,1990 Prelude, a 1997 Prelude, and a 2003 Honda Element preceding and the two Ridgeline’s ’06 and ’14. All have been amazing vehicles and served me well until I was ready to try a newer one.

    2. I regret getting rid of mine. Most comfortable car I ever had. It had a cd player and a cassett
Player now I have a 17 Tarus. I like hope it last long at least it has a cd player

    3. Agreed, anything with a 4.6 ford motor is bulletproof! Also the 3.8 gm motors. Installed one for a friend whose 88 Oldsmobile had 470000 miles on the odo. It just was worn out but still running with diminished power

    4. You have a 98 with 98 and you had stuff done to the front end I have a Toyota 4Runner and it matters not if you change the oil or any other maintenance it will be up and running fine when I hit 300000 miles as it does right now at 116ooo 2012…with 2 oil changes and breaks that’s it…I run it out of gas all the time and keep starting it and starting it and starting it never has any trouble the second gas goes in it goes I mean you’re talking about the difference in apples and oranges and I hate to say that I’m sorry I love American cars too but we’re talking about a car that’ll last a lifetime. That’s Toyota all the way I’ve had like five of them none of them broke down we had to destroy them literally my husband wrecked one of them into a telephone pole and the engine still ran great but the car was destroyed

  4. It is so sad to read this article, as not a single US made car was listed and I know for a FACT that there are several which easily could have made the list. The Ford made Crown Victoria, and it’s sister car the Mercury Marquis come to mind as just two examples of cars that have great staying power for long term use (Just ask anyone in law enforcement who has driven them). But the best cars from the past have to include General Motor’s C-Body cars: the Chevrolet Impala, Pontiac Bonneville, Buick LeSabre and Park Avenue, and Oldsmobile’s Eighty Eight and Ninety Eight models (of which I still own my 1994 Eighty Eight LSS since 2000). It has been a perfect car, with zero issues. The 3800 Buick V6 mated to a 4-speed overdrive transmission has performed flawlessly for 418,000+ miles, and today still delivers 26-28 MPG city, and 31 MPG on the highway. My routine maintenance costs are really, really low, as replacement plugs, wires, coil packs (every 100K), the air filter and a single serpentine belt are all ultra affordable and easy to find. Not so with most all foreign vehicles, and replacement parts tend to be quite expensive by comparison, and much harder to purchase locally. My car holds its alignment really well too, and still has its original aluminum alloy turbine-styled rims, with 225/60/16 tires that usually will last 60k to 75k miles (with regular rotation). With just regular cleaning and my care for its finish and trim, the Olds still looks new inside and out, and I have every intention of keeping it as it should easily still last my lifetime!

    1. I totally agree, with the exception of the small cars from the big 3 during the late 70s and early 80s when they scrambled to play with the Japanese, American cars were always made to last forever with proper maintenance. Problem is nobody wants to follow that. But even some of those were great. I had a 78 Ford Pinto I bought in 94 and after fixing an oil leak that had gotten neglected, that thing drove forever with zero problems. I mostly drive trucks, and any chevy or Ford pickup will last forever if maintained.

    2. I had a Taurus with 250000 miles on it and I hadn’t spent $1000 in repairs the whole time(including brakes)!

    3. 01’ Jeep Cherokee, 296,000 miles. daily driver. runs great. 4.0 inline 6cyl are, as they are called, “bulletproof” engines. I plan on buying another 01’ or older!

Chevy Cavaliers have longevity as well. My 88’ got well over 300k miles before gifting it to my cousin who then drove it for several years who then gifted it again to his friend. I believe the engine was a 2.0, 4cyl.

    4. ’99 F250 Super Duty. 7.3 IH Engine that is rated for well over 500K miles. Plus if any of those cars breakdown, I can tow them anywhere. Some i can just put into the long bed.

    5. I have 4 1996 Lincoln Town cars. Same platform as the Crown Vic. Love them Good for 500,000 or more Cheap to own, 23-4 MPH freeway easy to drive and comfortable.

    6. I’ll bet I’m not the only one who though you were someone else while reading your post.
I know a few people who still drive late 90’s Olds & Buicks.

I’ve noticed in the last 20 years magazines and consumer reports have biasedly left out american vehicles.

It’s not to say foreign vehicles are not a quality value in some cases, but there are several american vehicles I know last.

There was a good 30 years the leading motorcycle magazines printed negative on Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

My Ford ranger was constantly called outdated, long in the tooth not worth buying.

Yet the resale value remains way up high many years later.

    7. Don’t forget the Plymouth slant 6 back in the seventies they were getting 200 k back then.I have 03 grand marquis over 215 k doesn’t burn a drop of oil cab drivers report over 500 k miles you can buy these at $3000 and since they made so many of them parts are very inexpensive Every time I see these posts and not mentioning American cars

    8. I am a retired Oho State Trooper and retired after 30 years. I know for a fact since I drove Ford, Chevys, and Dodge Chargers, there was NO Foreign car that would come close to handling, Performance to an American car. The states have to test all cars in order to get the best, and I can tell everyone here that the American cars, Especially the Chevrolet 396 and 454, the Dodge with the Hemis, Fords with the 427s were so great drivers. Every foreign car that was tested could not even get to 120mph which was one of the requirements. The Dodge with the Hemi would turn 166 MPH on the Turnpike which there are many violators who run over 125mph and up. No foreign car tested came close to being approved for the total qualities needed for endurance, speed and handling.

    9. You are absolutely right in your statements about American cars. I have owned 156 cars in my 88 years. I still own the 1957 Olds 98 Starfire 2 door HT with the J2 engine that my wife and I got married in 1957. I bought the 57 Olds in December 1956 right when the 57s came out. After 68 years , this old Car is still in excellent conmdition and drives very much as it did in 1957. I have to use only premium fuel and dump a can of poctain booster in each fill up. I also buy one new car every year for a driver, and it is a 2024 Cadillac CT5 batwing. Talk about a great car, the Cad is awsume to drive. The cad will run right with the high performance Corvetts. But as you say, American Cars should be mentioned as the top of the line drivers,.

    10. I totally agree. I have a 2002 Ford F250 with heading to 300K miles. Still looks and runs great. And rides as smooth as the day we purchased. My sister has a 2000 lincoln town car with over 200K miles. Still runs like a scalded dog. All original. We have a Ford van at work with 260K miles on it. A 2007. Not a problem. Still runs loaded up with equipment every day to jobs. I could go on and on. We have older Dodge and Chevys in the family with no issues as well.

    11. You’re an outlier. A great owner that knows how to take care of his vehicles. Not so for the mear mortals of the driving world. Congrats!

    12. Your experience with your American made cars is wonderful. Until a couple of years ago I still had my 1990 Chevy Silverado! Due to an inept driver my truck was hit, only ever having regular maintenance and ran perfectly. My handyman bought it for parts for his chevy but since mine was still running strong he used his for parts and he is still driving (which I refer to as “our” truck) and has almost 400,000 miles on it with a new trans. I sure miss that truck.
You’re a lucky guy to have those solid, dependable, American cars!

    13. I have a 2011 Buick Enclave CXL that’s in excellent condition and has every bell and whistle available back then.
It rides smoother than the new Lexus ever can and is built rock solid.
      #never selling it!

  5. My Honda Civic “Little Bit of Gold” has had a rough life. But he has survived. A week after purchasing spanking new from dealership the left front wheel almost fell off. The battery died 3 months later, there were recalls including air bag (twice) faulty, transmission leaks and lastly, the innocent victim of gunshot. But I’m not trading. My car and I are partners until the end.

  6. You forgot the Toyota Yaris.
Inexpensive, fuel efficient, basic and reliable.
Mine is an 07 with only 110,000 miles. Just broken in.
I keep the car clean and maintained but I’m not a fanatic and the car looks like it just rolled out of the showroom. Easy to work on.
If you’re looking for a good used one, good luck. They’re such great cars that people
hold onto them forever. But if you can find one, they’ll last forever.
Did I mention that they handle like a go kart?

    1. Agreed, I have a 2009 Yaris with 58,000 miles. Only problem is the paint finish. Brought it to an auto body shop and he said it was the clear coat and to just drive it until it died. If they still made them, I would buy another one!

    2. Still miss my ‘steady’ 1973 Toyota Corolla station wagon, [with luggage rack]. If they were only made in a 5-speed, I’d still be driving it today! Bought it used for $850, in Burbank, CA., 1981. I let it go–1986. ‘I should have hung-on to it’!! The body was ‘near mint’. It ran like a ‘fine watch’. 54″ wide. I ‘used’ to sojourn up bike lanes, to make ‘the right on red’–[in congested LA traffic]. The ‘perfect’ vehicle. The ‘perfect’ size. Indeed, the ‘Yaris’ might have been something I might’ve bought ‘new’.

    3. I got one. Had to go basically to ” hell and back” to get it. Just told someone today that according to insurance company value of it has increased. As long as I dont crash it on unplowed roads will be all set. Im not convinced they handle all that well in snow…
      Sorry

    4. I am so mad at myself. I took mine to the dealer to have minor maintenance done and was told I had transmission issues. The car was driving fine. My son-in -law asked me several questions and all my answers were no. The Yaris had about 70k on it. I will never be suckered like this again. I have a 2019 Toyota corolla and I plant to ride it till it disintegrates.

    5. I am a true Toyota fan, I have a 2001 Toyota Echo since 2016 and done regular oil changes and had spark plugs replaced in 2024, other then that regular maintenance, no problem. Love Toyota they live up to their reputation…..reliable!!

  7. My vote is for the chevy Silverado. I own an 03 that is just short of 300,000 miles and know of one in Memphis that has passed 700,000 miles, all city driving.

    1. My 1971 Porsche 911 E is bullet proof.
Only 2.2L but still track competive against 3+L cars..
      The SECRET pounds/ hp!

    2. My 97 Silverado ( K1500), 3 – door is still my everyday driver with nearly 388k miles. The paint gleams like new.

    3. My 07 Silverado looks and runs like new at 190K but gas mileage not so hot Drive the Hyundai unless I need a truck

    4. I have a 2004 Ford F-150 Lariat 4 x 4 , extended bed with 188k miles. Runs great but maintenance has been a key to its longevity.

    5. I have a 2004 Chevy Tahoe with 250000 miles on it. Still runs and looks great. It’s a keeper.

  8. I am surprised that the Prius made the list. These all have a Li Ion battery bank that will eventually need replacing – at no small cost! I know that Toyota make a quality product. Lithium-compound batteries have a limited life span.

Also surprising is the Civic. Everyone I know that owns one thinks they are junk.

    1. For the former comment I agree, for the latter I most certainaly don’t agree.
These vehicles are long lasting with very few mechanical issues

    2. I just replaced the battery in a friends Prius. I shopped around and found a place that sells refurbished batteries ( $1000 ). I’m a car guy and electronics by trade. It wasn’t an easy job, but I got older ladies car back on the road and saved her a lot of money.

    3. You can get ‘refutbished’ battery packs on Ebay for dirt cheap! You don’t have to buy a new replacement from the Toyota dealership.

    4. No lithium batteries here. My 08 and 04 had nickel batteries going strong past 251 000 miles. My 13 camry hybrid has 230000 miles nickel batteries and keeps

    5. Honda Civic was my 1st car and my parents and aunt and uncle also bought them to the reliability, had it for a very long time and gas mileage amazing plus in my case, It had front wheel drive, awesome in all weather conditions.

  9. I’ve had two Mercedes sedans (1969 240 and a 2011 350E) that I bought used and each has gone over 500,000 miles. No major repairs, just routine maintenance and oil changes.

    1. My Mercedes CLK 320 petrol 2001 cabrio can deliver 40mpg on a careful run with a silky smooth V6 on 86k miles will keep it until it’s a classic

  10. You should qualify your statement that they occasionally need a battery, those batteries are around $3,000 and hundreds to have installed. That is an important and pricey ‘repair’

    1. I think you are talking about the Prius? They usually go over 200k before they need a battery. The Toyota dealer will fleece you like you state, but if you have any mechanical ability you can fix it for a couple hundred. Ebay even sells the battery “packs” that go in the big battery very cheaply and you usually only need a couple of them. I have done many so I am well aware.

  11. You picked the Volvo 900, the original Volvo long term driver was the Volvo 240 the original “Swedish Brick” with Hundreds of thousand of miles, many have hit the million miles milestone. Many have called them a tractor with a car body, easy to work on good mileage and the station wagon is excellent in the snow! The newer version is the XC70 AWD or the V70 FWD the 5 cylinder is tough as nails with good fuel mileage and common longevity of the engine well in excess of 500,000 miles. With normal care the bodies don’t rust!

    1. I had a 1988 Volvo 240 DL wagon for 25 years–until some kid made an illegal left turn in front of me and mashed the Volvo. His Nisson was confetti on the roadway, while I drove my Volvo home. He had airbags and still was injured. My car did not have airbags and I didn’t get a scratch. Repairs would have cost thousands, and his insurance company offered me more if they could call the car totaled and haul it away. Very sadly, I let them take the car. I now have a 2006 Honda Element. It’s a good car, but not nearly the quality as my beloved Volvo was. The 240’s were said to be forever cars. I knew one guy whose 240 had over 1 million miles!

  12. I bought a new Volvo XC70 a few years ago and disliked it even though my Father was Swedish and had recommended it. The seats were made for tall men and I could NOT get comfortable, being a somewhat short woman. Repairs were expensive in the US. Eventually I sold it and bought a new Subaru Forester in 2007. I loved it and still have it. It is comfortable, I like the height, and the few repairs it has needed were affordable.

  13. Very good and informative article. Helps me decide what car I want to purchase next. Really enjoyed reading this article.

  14. I own a 2015 Honda CR-V. I have never owned a Honda and i luv my SUV. Im disabled so im not able to bend my right leg and bend over to get in and out of a small vehicle. The trunk is big enough to put my walker plus my dogs stroller plus other things. I luv my Honda all the way around and from now on, i will only own a SUV Honda. Its perfect for me and i feel safe and comfortable while driving. My Honda is also big enough to go camping in. Honda is now my SUV of choice and will never buy any other vehicle.

    1. I agree I also have a 2015 Honda CRV and out of all the vehicles I’ve owned this one is by far the best ever. It was also my first Honda vehicle and I’m hooked Honda is awesome!

    2. I own a 2014 Honda CRV. Will soon hit 30,000 miles. I don’t drive a lot. Don’t get very good gas mileage. Now for the big stuff. So far I replaced the battery twice, the alternator, the water pump and lastly a valve in the air conditioner. I really like the way it handles and the size fits me, but I’m really really disgusted with the repairs I have had to make. thought this would be the last car I owned but pretty sure that is not true now. Hope everyone else has had better luck!

    3. I have a 2014 CRV
Very near 30,000 miles. So far I have replaced the battery twice, the alternator, the water pump and a valve in the air conditioner. My gas mileage is very poor.
I love the way it handles and it fits me quite well but I’m very disappointed in the maintenance problems. I thought it would be the last car I bought but now I’m unsure.

    4. We have a 2014 CRV that has been a joy to own. Only routine maintenance, the interior and exterior are in excellent condition. Although new cars have the extra bells and whistles, we’ll hold onto this comfortable, dependable vehicle.

  15. I have a 320E Mercedes Benz with 250,000 miles and little care just regular yearly oil changes and a tune-up. This is gas, not diesel.

  16. Need to put some SUVs On the list! Our family has driven jeeps since the early 80s, and have never had a major issue! We Live in rural Western Iowa, 6 miles north west of Sioux City farm at the top Of a Hill. The only problem with ever had with a jeep is my mother was going up the hill on a muddy road that was half frozen in the winter time, hit a soft spot that pulled her up often the side of the road, she overcorrected end up in the ditch. It rolled over and down the hill to the bottom Of the ditch. She never took her foot off the gas And it never died, she Is a heavy smoker and knew, If she stopped, she was stuck and there was no way she could crawl up muddy Bank on a 25° day. So she just kept in the gas drove through the end Rows Until she reached the spot that turned back out onto the gravel road, drove home and parked in the garage! Broke out two of the windows in the rollover, passenger side, and the right rear,Cracked the front

    1. I have a 1996 Jeep Cherokee 4×4 with 199,000 on it. I’ve had to put in a new starter and a few other parts in it. It’s all original and it’s all stock. I love my Jeep and it gets me where I’m going. I plan on keeping it forever.

    1. People that drive alot of highway miles are going to rack up a bunch of miles and so they want a car that has a high mpg and this translates into less fuel cost…..this is why people in this category have high mileage on their Toyotas, Hondas ect.

City miles on the other hand, having a lot of stop and go, is were you put the most wear and tear on vehicles…this is why these wear out faster, having less lifetime miles.
Overall, mileage has more to do with the environment you drive in, not so much the vehicle name plate.

  17. I like reading this informations, then I include a toyota’s 4 RUNNER Olds my 2000 stick shift 4 cylinder is the best a toyota makes. I LOVE that I use calling nick name my POSSANTE.

  18. I have a Toyota Corolla and absolutely LOVE it. Had a 2008 with over 120,000 miles and it was unfortunately hit and the other drivers insurance company ‘total loss’ it. Would definitely get another Corolla hands down.

  19. I have a 1986 Toyota Camery 5 speed! It ran perfect until a tree landed on it during a bad storm. The roof is a bit caved in by the front windshield which was broken from the storm. It still starts and runs perfect except for the roof and windshield. This car never gave me a problem!

  20. Excellent article! I am now very old but for over 30 years when I was employed, I worked at a job that involved daily driving of 50 to 100 miles or more a day. We were paid mileage and used our own cars. Employees used every car imaginable, although I do not remember any Volvo’s and over the years and we came to the conclusion that the Toyota’s, Honda’s and General Motors products were the most reliable. I now drive a Lexus RX 350. It is my second one, as my first was T-Boned and totaled- I didn’t get a scratch. I was thinking replacing it with a Ram diesel PU (guy thing) and my wife advised me that I needed to get another Lexus, as I had just survived an accident in one that was totaled, even though I drove it home.

  21. My 2008 Honda Ridgeline has been a great vehicle. I am 87 so it will be mine forever. No problems yet though the best milage is a the best at 20mpg. Knock on wood.

  22. I think a Subaru forester (of course manual) should be somewhere on this list. I have a 2003 with 228,000 miles still running strong!

  23. I have a ’90Subaru Legacy wagon that was built-in 1989 that is still running like new in August 2024…Has close to 300,000miles…do regular oil changes and replaced timing belt once…1light in dashboard has burned out and 1power window doesn’t work, a little rust here and there, but for a 35year old car it is a jewel!!! Can’t believe not 1 Subaru made your list!!!…???

  24. I have owned a 2016 Toyota RAV4, bought it used with 13,000 miles on it and now have 74,000. Not my first Toyota (after owning Toyotas for several years, a Saturn, and then a Honda CR-V) and am so pleased to be back in a Toyota. As far as I’m concerned, this is the best automobile maker. I am hoping this one lasts me for the rest of my life – I will be 67 this week! Thank you!!!

  25. 99 & 07 Silverado
99 no transmission or engine problems when it was sold to a friend @240k
07 went 210k before it needed a transmission and still going just short of 300k
Maintain your vehicle properly and it will last a lot longer no matter the brand .

  26. My 750 Volvo went 250000 miles and I never should have sold it

Most reliable car I ever owned

Three other Volvos s60 s80 and xc60 were never as reliable as the 750

  27. I bought my 2014 Chrysler Town and CountrTouring L NEW. I have had a rocker arm go bad. It now has over 400,000 on it. No suspension or steering problems. Had one alignment. It will be with me when I die. A truly great mini van.

  28. GMC Yukon xl I’ve got an 04 4×4 I’ve owned it for 18 plus years, never kept a vehicle that long ever! I can go out and get in it and go wherever I want 184000 miles doesn’t use oil ac still cold as ever absolutely the best vehicle I’m going to treat it to a paint job as soon as I can it’s held up far better than I

  29. I bought a 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo in 2016 for 1200$ that had a sensor issue. Three years later at 274,768 miles a piston broke in 2019. We rebuilt the motor and transmission. Since we had the motor out. It now has 288,900 mile. It sounds brand new. My spouse said I will get another 200,000 even more out it. As long as I keep up on maintenance. Which previous owner did not. Love the 4.0 liter motors best motors ever.

  30. You left out my 2000 Toyota Land Cruiser. Runs beautifully. I can’t recall the number of times I have been approached and asked if I will sell it. No way!

  31. Ah, I think of my first car – 1969 Dodge Charger – red body and black roof with a wood panel look inside. I often wonder if it is still around and running. I learned how to drive a stick shift on my dad’s 1955 Chevy. I would like to drive a stick shift again. No fun on hills stopped to get it going again. Finding that special spot with the clutch and gas was fun.

  32. My current vehicle is a 2013 CX-5 AWD mazda. I have almost 249,000 mi on it interior looks great body has a few dings.
Car before that was a 2000 Toyota Camry with 252, 000+ miles on it and car before that 1985? Volvo 740GLE with over 334,000+ miles.
I did have a Ford Futura with over 100,000 miles, too.

  33. We have a 1998 Land Cruiser and will never get rid of it. People are always asking us if we are interested in selling it. I believe my husband would get rid of me before he gave up this car. Oh, and by the way, we gave our daughter our 98 4Runner that she will never get rid of!

  34. My 2001 Roush is still the best one I have owned. I am a Mustang guy and I have a 2001, 1968 convertible and 1969 Mach 1 428 Cobra Jet. I wish I could afford a new one, however, I am retired and on fixed budget.

  35. how did the Jeep Country make out that the US Postal service used in rural areas of America? It had a 4.0 liter straight 6 that was tractor like. I’ve seen some with many miles on the clock.

  36. I have a 2005 Honda Odyssey which I bought used in 2013 with had 78k miles. It is now 2024 and has 134k miles and still going strong. I remember back in th early 2000s A Japanese company GAVE a man a NEW car because he had a MILLION miles on it!!! The car dealership said it was because he TOOK CARE of the car and that most vehicles CAN reach that if they took care of it, yearly maintenance, changing water pumps if you have them etc. so I am trying to preserve mine because I can’t afford another one right now.

  37. I got a 97 Camry in 2009. I have since been unable to get rid of. Talk about reliable. Fine I have to admit the door locks all broke but my mechanic fixed that. And of course I had to change the timing belt. And the paint was peeling so I took a deal that maaco had despite my mechanic insisting the car was too old and not worth it. Boy was he wrong. Years later this vehicle proves its worth. AC, heat, transmission, cooling. Seasons come and go,It just keeps going on. I’ve had and seen my buddies with much newer cars get rid of them and this vehicle keeps rolling like it was new. They are the best cars ever made at that time.

  38. I drive my old 2009 Ford Escape that’s my baby girl. Routine oil changes, need 4 tires before winter. I love my Fords.

  39. 2009 Wrangler Sahara, 225,000 miles, minimal maintenance. I’ve taken it where most won’t even consider going. Nope, doesn’t get 45mpg like my ’85 Honda Civic, but just as sturdy!

  40. I drove 70 miles each way to and from work in Defiance, Ohio, I lived in Michigan. I did this for 22 years, and owned several different kinds of cars. The ones that held up the best were the Chevy Cavaliers, A ‘97, an ‘01, and a ‘05. All were sticks, all got around 40 mpg, all were low maintenance. The ‘05 had around 379,000 miles on it still running strong. Regular maintenance. Maybe I was just lucky?! By the way, I rear ended a Jeep Cherokee at 30+ mph, the jeep was sitting still, my ABS desperately trying to stop the car. We all walked away. The little Cav gave her all!

  41. Ron Nicholson says: I have owned a 2005 Toyota Matrix XR for 18 years, and never had any major repairs so far. I use all season tires and drive in Toronto in winter and had no issues. It’s very well designed car and for a ninety year old guy, it is very comfortable. It still drives like new. I always use synthetic oil, and change every 8000 Kms.

  42. I had a 1980 Audi 5000T(urbo).
I gave it to my daughter @ 150,000 miles.
She gave it to her son @ 215,000 miles
He recently sold it with 436,000 miles.

Once i created a big repair.
The turbo bearing was cooled by engine oil
It was well know that the car should be idle for a few minutes prior to turning it off after a big run.
Once I was in a big hurry and after driving hard for four hours, I stopped for gas in immediately hit the road.
I saw a lot of smoke in the Riverview mirror and said… Wow somebody’s got a problem.
    It was me.
Installed a new turbo and that was it except for tires and brake pads and oil changes and all the other maintenance

  43. 2012 Camry hybrid. 193000 miles. Never have had a problem. Only expenses have been tires, brakes and oil changes. Best car i have ever owned!

  44. I have a 2012 cadillac Escalade ext with 260000 miles transmission at 225000 other than that no major issues

  45. I love my 14 kia sportage I make sure it has its oil change, brakes taken care of and it takes care of me.
    Love it

  46. Honda Accord, had a 1999, 200,000 miles. Never did anything but change oil. Of course did regular changes, rotate tires, tune ups. Great car!!! Gave it to step son and he wrecked it in two weeks. Totaled it.

  47. Still driving my 28-year-old 1996 Subaru Outback. Bought it new and it’s still going strong. Of course, I’ve had to replace the usual things along the way—fuel pump, timing belt, brakes, clutch, etc…(yes, I chose to buy a manual transmission), but I go to a shop I trust and they’ve taken good care of me.

  48. American truck 2006 Ford Lariat F150 with the 5.4 Triton V8, has 283k miles, rides and hauls whatever I need. I must have gotten lucky and got the only good one cause all I hear is that it’s the worst engine Ford ever build, it’s all original, always starts right up. I’ve driver this truck all over the U.S., she never leaves me stranded and always brings me home.

  49. I own an ’07 Ford Escape Hybrid 167k miles on it. I love it. So grateful I bought it new in’ 06. 18 years ago. I’m a very happy camper. I used to own an old Volvo in the 80’s. A great car! Sturdy, safe and comfy. I regret trading it in for a Honda Civic who’s compressor went out after 6 years. Just sayin’

  50. My 1994 Chevy S-10 pickup is approaching 300K and still running strong. Planning to keep it…for many more years/miles I hope!

  51. My 1991 Lexus LS is still going strong. Very little maintenance except routine. Very quiet comfortable ride. My 2008 LS is also doing fine. Love those V-8s. Highway mileage at 70mph is 33. Avg mileage is 27 mpg. Sad they no longer make the 8. Current V-6 does not get better mileage and is not as smooth or powerful.

  52. Toyota Corolla! Mine is just about 20 years old and it’s been a dream car. They are used as taxis in the Phillipines because they just go and go.

  53. I’ve had the 280 6-cylindar twin cam beautiful SL Mercedes Benz, 17 layers of baked enamel pearlized off-white paint…..last of the “hand-made models” from 1973, classic fog lights and grill….(went through snow and rainstorm safe and sound every time, slow and steady….with my precious cargo –2 small kids then). Bilstein independent suspension, coupled with free-moving axles….It was so even-keeled, so tight, even in old age, that you couldn’t hear ANYTHING outside…no road, no noises, no weather….The only reason we sold it was it needed an entire new exhaust system (1997) that we’d been patching together for a couple of years. It was stainless steel with rhodium, palladium, etc…and was too costly for us to handle at the time. And don’t judge—I bought one of the first Saturn SL 2 Sedans…sunroof and all…twin cam 6-cylindar with manual overdrive performance button….and racing tires. Five seat-belts. Fold-down seats front and back. It had 225,000 miles on it. Ran like a top. Never lost mileage: 25-26 mpg way back in the 90’s. The day after we had it in for a mandated CA inspection (smog– that it passed easily) my neighbor’s evil child and friends “bricked it” and destroyed the curved driver’s window and roofline….(they were caught, b/c they “bricked” dozens of cars in our neighborhood, for “thrills”) which “totaled” the car for its age just on the cost of the windshield alone. I’m STILL sad/mad about it.

  54. I had a Ford Maverick that was sold after 20 years for $1000. I now have a 2005 Ford Focus that is still running well. I’m 74 and will be keeping it until either I or the car can’t go anymore.

  55. I drive a 2004 Acura TL. It has 512,000+ miles. Never been in the engine. Still has the original starter and alternator. By far the best car I have ever owned. It is a six speed manual. Almost 300hp. Very quick, but gets 31 mpg. Very fun and comfortable to drive. A fully loaded vehicle. It should have been on this list…and is very sought after even at 20 years old.

  57. My Chrysler PT Cruiser Special Edition , Survived 23 years. I, Just said Good bye to it. 160.000 miles.
Some tender loving Care the past 3 years, for me it was a Great Car.
    Thank you, Chrysler! 👍👍👍👍👍

  58. Have had 3 Camrys and drove them to 150,000 plus miles and only needed regular oil and filter, air filters, one set of brakes and two sets of tires. No major repairs. no warranty repairs. just add gasoline and drive. Highly reliable. Two were Hybrid Camrys.

  59. I have a 1996 Chevy K1500 Silverado it has a little over 300,000 miles. Other thani paint and regular maintainence I have had no problems. It is a great Pickup.

  60. “I had to purchase a new “2024 Camry” this year. Best choice I could have ever made, it’s a hybrid, and it’s very reliable going from point A to point B. I do believe in the Basic fundamentals of life and investing in myself. I hope to be able to pass it own to one of my family members.

  61. Have a 2000 Toyota Land Cruiser. Bought it in 2005 for $25,000. Have been offered $30,000, but since I’m 86 years old and the car drives like new, I think this will be my last car.

  62. These cars are almost brand new. My 1992 Mazda Miata runs great and virtually noting has ever gone wrong. Of couse, it only has 45k miles on it.

  63. I have 2003 Subaru BAJA 203,000 miles and I still drive it everyday. Before that a 1986 Subaru BRAT with 200,000 miles and sold it 2012. Subarus will go an easy 200,000 plus with no issues.

  64. Miata owner here. Mine is a newer model. My neighbor, and several others where I live are over 20 yrs old and rolling just fine.

  65. Looks like American made cars still don’t measure up to foreign in the category “Cars that last a lifetime”!

  66. Driving 2005 Ram 2500 4×4 crewcab, diesel. Bought it 2009 with 69k miles, has 190k now just replaced injectors. Lived in FL & CO weather extremes. Love this truck.

  67. I have a 2004 Hyundai Sonato and I have had no major problems and I just love it. Be l_eive me they are great cars. I been driving it now over 20yrs.

  68. I like the Honda Civic. I bought one new seven years ago for a granddaughter. Someone hit her in the rear on the interstate, totalled the car and kept on going. I paid $25,000 for the car, and the insurance company gave me $18,455 for it!!! Of course I can’t get a new one for that price, but I was amazed to get that much for it. It had just over 50,000 miles on it.

  69. I have a 2004 Camry, still runs fine. My daughter has it. Then I got a 2008 Highlander. My neighbor bought it from me last year.(he just drove it from Florida to California and back. NP) Now I have a 2023 Rav 4. And I live it! Best Cars ever. Maybe the U.S. should take notes.

  70. Prius ?….Yaris ?….you must be joking !….these are some of the ugliest cars ever built !…and keep them a lifetime ?

  71. Interesting, all the cars listed are imports. But when was the last time you saw “A Import Classic Car Show?” I own a 1995 Ford Explorer and a 2013 Chevrolet Camero. Other than minor repairs on the Ford and just routine maintenance on the Chevrolet I have not had any problems with either one. In the same time period I have owned my Camero my friend has gone thru three Prius’s. One lasted less than a year before he traded it in.

  72. The all time best car in Africa was the Peugeot 504. I still have my ’74 Peugeot 504 Coupe which was Enzo Ferrari’s daily driver 1968-77. He said it was the most beautiful car Peugeot ever made. It was rustproofed in Holland where they are much more thorough.

  73. Put a 1970 Chevelle SS LS6, dark red with black hood and trunk stripes, and tell me who wouldn’t want it? And this car is 54 years old.

  74. I have a 2008 Chrysler Town&Country van and still running. It is my only vehicle and have always done required maintenance on it.

  75. I had a ’99 Toyota Avalon that lasted me 298,000 miles before I donated it away.
The engine was still strong but the interior was not in great shape.
I also had a ’96 Toyota Camry that went 218,000 miles before it was totaled.
My last ’09 Camry XLE went 272,000 miles for me before I sold it to a co-worker
who badly wanted to buy it and it’s still going strong!

  76. I had a 1991 Honda CRX CIVIC my daughter bought it right off the truck and we traded for my ford pivkup. I sold it after 31 years with 288,000 miles on it. It was serviced and well taken care of but it developed a problem and not a mechanic shop in my area could figure it out. I could go out start it drive it and the next it wouldn’t start. We changed out all the electrical parts that I had purchased new covered under warranty but nothing fixed it. It spent 3 weeks at the Honda dealership and they couldn’t figure it out. After 6 weeks of being with out a car I bit the bullet and sold it and bought a Toyata Camry. What a mistake that was. The CRX NEVER had to have any major repairs. Got 50 to 60 mpg was small and could turn on a dime. I we wish I had never sold it. The most I get is 25mpg it is big and it will not turn on a dime. I hit curbs and run over curbs. Not sure I will ever get use to the camry. I might drive 3000 miles a year now. Should have never sold it. It would have run another 200,000 miles.

  77. I have owned a Toyota Prius since 2011. Hands down, this is the best car I have ever owned. At 93,000 miles I replaced the battery and have yet to need new brakes. I am a retiree and plan to keep this car until I can no longer drive. Oh yeah, it gets 50 miles/gallon. Pretty sweet!

  79. We purchased a new 1997 Volve 850T Limited Edition. We should have kept it. The dealership was by far the best dealership from which we bought a new car. At the end of 2001 we traded it in for for a new 2002 Volvo S60. That was a big mistake. The 850 had 84,500 miles and ran and looked brand new. We never had a single problem with it in the 5 years we owned it. The Volvo S60 was junk. It was one of the worst new vehicles we ever owned. It was as bad as the new Ford Pinto we bought in 1973. The S60 had serious transmission problems, injector problems and as I said was 100% junk. It was in the shop more often than any other vehicle we owned.

We bought the S60 from the same salesperson that we bought the 850T from 5 years earlier but at a different dealership. We should have listened to him. He told us the new Volvos were nothing like the 90s models and suggested that we might want to look at Audi or BMW instead. He said he was pursing a profession because he no longer wanted to be a car salesperson especially selling the new Volvos because they were so bad.

By far the 850T was the best new vehicle we ever owned and the dealership from which we purchased it was the best dealership.

  80. I have 1999 ford f350 7.3 diesel with 250 no major repairs just regular maintenance tires battery and oil

  81. I have a 2015 Toyota Highlighter with 235,000 miles and have never had any problems with it, so I will drive it until it falls apart. Great automobile! I have religiously changed oil and I make sure that my tires are in good shape.

  82. I have to go with Toyota Corolla. They run forever, just under 32 mpg around town and pushing high 50’s on road trips.

  83. I had a 2010 Lincoln MKZ and sold it (I regret) had 170,000 miles on it, except regular maintenance, had no major problems, never took into shop. Oh yes the body was in perfect shape, with 0 rust.

  84. I have o wned several Buick Roadmasters 1994-1996 models have gotten good mileage and long life also they are very solid and will stand up in an accident.

  85. BMW E39 530i should be added to the list. Will last 500,000+ miles when properly maintained. It was a time when BMW built a good car.

  86. The article failed to mention the Toyota Carolla, they last forever and are easy to work on and cheap to maintain. I have a 2013 and it still runs like a champ.

  87. my current car is a 2001 chrysler sebring with 128,000 miles on it. i bought it 15 years ago for $5,000. i just spent $3,000 to fix a lot of things, but, up until now, it was a really good car. can’t afford to buy another car as i’m 70 and living on social security as my only income. i only drive around 200 miles/year.

  88. I purchased a ’99 Dodge 3/4 ton pickup new. Last year the cost to drive this trk was $165 per month plus fuel. This $165 a month included it’s annual oil change [11 qts. of oil and filter], new tires and engine accessory belt. Oh ya I forgot to mention that I had to have the roofs clear coat resprayed due to sun damage

  89. I just bought a 95 Honda Accord with 140,000 miles on it with the 2.2 L four cylinder engine. These cars along with their predecessors with the 1.8 L and 2.0 L engines, have been documented to last 500,000 miles if not more.

  90. they are just trying to sell you a bill of goods to buy the vehicle they want you to buy don’t fall for it. I have a 2024 Nissan Altima SL and its a great car and will last a long time.

  91. I have a 2002 Toyota Camry XLE. Bought it second hand with 28,000 mileage and still in excellent condition. Current mileage is 60,000 (2025). Granted I have been only using it for light driving from 2022 (covid time) – still serves its purpose from point A to B. Very comfortable.

  92. I kept waiting for my car to come up on this list. Alas, you left off one of the best cars ever. My 1995 Honda Accord is still my everyday driver. At 30 years old, with over 400,000 miles on it, it still is the most fun to drive. I should add that it is the 6-cylinder model so I can’t speak for those less solid 4-cylinder models. If you want a car that will last and last, you should consider the 6-cylinder Honda Accord. Couldn’t ask for anything more than I’ve gotten from my 1995 Honda Accord.

  93. I think Toyota will regret going to 4 cylinder turbo charged engines in so many of their vehicles.

  94. I have a 2007 Toyota Avalon driven off the lot in April of 2007 and has 323,845 miles and is still running fine.

  95. We have a 2005 Ford Focus with 328,000 miles on & has been passed down in 2 generations. If take care to begin with it takes care of you – it even was stolen & we got it back 4 years ago & it is still going!

  96. The problem with American cars was the general strategy by the big automakers from 1960 – 1990 was the idea of ‘planned obsolescence’, your product was designed to last a certain length of time and use (mileage). For American cars it was 5 years (time for new design) and 80,000 miles. That was when the value of a used American car decreased significantly. Why? Greed, baby greed. Ensured long term sales. The Japanese cars came in cheaper, smaller and lasted longer. American manufacturers are still trying to catch up. I drive Honda’s and Toyota’s and have reached 200 -300,000 miles with average maintenance on everyone of them. Dan Neal, auto reviewer for WSJ just rated the new Honda Civic as one of the best cars he has ever driven with an average price tag.

  97. I have a 2009 Ford Focus 2-door. It has 151,000+ miles and has never had a repair on engine or tyranny. Only 2 suspension parts were repaired and nothing else except maintenance items like tires, wiper blades, battery, brakes and oil changes.

  98. I’ve owned a few Chevy Impala and owne one no it’s a 2012 it has 35000 miles and runs like a dream theese cars last for ever with the v6 .we’ll over 200000 miles and afortable to maintain and comfortable and dont nicle and you .

  100. I would like to know the status of my 53 3100 pick up that I paid $10,000 down on and that I have a contract on Sophia said that she would give it sent out but she never has so I’m just wondering if this is a scam for older vehicles I would like to talk to somebody 801-509-7398

  101. I have a 2004 Toyota Highlander V6 and it’s mileage right now is 221K, never missed any tune-up/change oil schedule; still running good; had some expensive repairs but that’s fine compared to monthly premium for a new car👍

  102. I owned a 1978 Chevy Scottsdale 4X4 that I was the 2nd owner. I bought it in1999 with 215,600 miles on the odometer. I drove it for 12 years before I decided to sell it while it was still running great. I gave $1000.00 for the truck when I bought it, as I negotiated with the owner down from the $1400.00 he was asking for the truck. Ten $100 dollar bills spoke loud enough to buy the truck. That was an amazing truck that I never did get it stuck in the mud and I went through places I never dreamed I could get through in that truck! My son and his friends called the truck THE BEAST! They had me a license plate made saying THE BEAST! I pulled some many trucks out of areas they were stuck in that some laughed at me prior to me hooking up to pull it. THE BEAST silenced their laughs!! When I sold THE BEAST it had 375,888 miles on it and was still running great. I sold it for $750.00 and a semi auto 22 Marlin rifle In those years I owned the truck I only spent $12.99 on a fuel pump, that took 10 minutes to take off the old pump and put new pump on!! GREAT TRUCK!!!

  103. I have a 2025 Toyota Crown Siena. Best car I ever owned. Hybrid, 37 not on highway. Turbo and super quiet and smooth.

  104. My daily driver is a 1996 Jeep Cherokee with 225700 miles on it. It starts up every day and is easy to work on. I have done 75 oil changes and other maintenance items over the 30 years of ownership. The only large item was to have the transmission rebuilt at 215000 miles.
I keep cars a long time and still own the first car I had in college, it is a 1970 Chevrolet Monte Carlo that I have owned and driven for over 51 years.
Our trip vehicle is a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe that is in great shape and loves to do 80 in the highway.

  105. I have a 1999 E320 that I purchased used about 20 years ago. It still looks and run good. We had it serviced by the dealer until they stopped working on older vehicles a couple of years ago. I’ve replaced the battery, alternator and fuel pump. She has her antique tag and is expected to hang with me
