A few car brands have their million-mile club, where countless dollars and hours have been poured into a Volvo, Mercedes, Volkswagen, or other, generally German name to keep it running for ages.
In theory, any vehicle can run nearly forever with the right amount of work, but most of us don’t have the inclination or resources to do that. Instead, we want a pair of wheels that’s going to rack up a few hundred thousand miles while requiring little maintenance.
While leasing a new car for two or three years now makes up about a third of all transactions, it’s not for everyone. Of course, for those who are just starting out and want to drive a cool car on an affordable basis before the reality of a family and home set it, or can write off on their taxes as a business expense, it’s not a bad idea.
However, if you’re within reach of or into your golden years, the smart money goes all in to stay in the range of the cars that last a long time.
